How to Treat a Sprained Foot

Depending on what kind of sprain you have, Foot injury treatment will be different. The four main types are famous turf toe, mid-foot sprain, normal ankle sprain, and high ankle sprain. Immediate treatment helps reduce healing time.

This treatment is often called RICE, which stands for Rest, Ice, Elevation, and Compression. Compression just means wrapping the foot in a long bandage. Get X-rays when possible to determine that nothing has broken.

Treating Famous Turf Toe

Wrap the injury so it’s compressed. Ice for 15 minutes. Elevate the foot. Take an over-the-counter painkiller like ibuprofen or naproxen to reduce both pain and swelling.

Treating Mid-Foot Sprain

RICE. Healing time can take anywhere from a week to two months. Physical therapy may not be necessary.

Treating Normal Ankle Sprain

RICE and apply a brace if necessary. Physical therapy may not be necessary but is suggested, depending on how bad the sprain is. Healing time can take weeks or months.

Treating High Ankle Sprain

RICE and take painkillers. This kind of sprain can be tricky to heal, but the average time is less than three months.
